OXFORD, Ala. – The Birmingham-Southern women's soccer team routed the Talladega College Tornadoes 12-0 on the road on Saturday night, earning the win in its season-opener.
Eight different Panthers scored in the match, including two freshmen who recorded their first career goals.
Sophomore forward Sydney Barrow (Birmingham, Ala./Indian Springs HS) opened up the scoring in the first half. Fellow sophomore Abby Kay Choate (Tifton, Ga./Tift County HS) and senior McKenna Boyd (Versailles, Ky./Woodford County HS) also found the back of the net in the opening 45 minutes. Choate's sole goal came off an assist from freshman midfielder Emma Choate (Tifton, Ga./Tift County HS).
Boyd more than doubled BSC's lead before the break with a first-half hat-trick. She scored BSC's third goal unassisted and then tacked on her other two goals with assists from sophomore forward Katherine Tucker (Tuscaloosa, Ala./Tuscaloosa Academy) and freshman midfielder Amber Thompson (Waxhaw, N.C./Cuthbertson HS), respectively.
At halftime, BSC led Talladega 5-0.
The Panthers would go on to score seven more goals in the second half. Freshmen Emma Choate and defender Kirby Hopkins (Gurley, Ala./Huntsville HS) scored their first career goals in the second half. Sydney Barrow, sophomore Josy Gray (Indian Springs, Ala./Indian Springs HS), sophomore Lettie Lundy (Mt. Pleasant, S.C./Wando HS), and senior Taylor Andrews (Watkinsville, Ga./Oconee County HS) scored the remainder of BSC's 12 goals with Andrews scoring two and assisting on another.
Sophomore goalkeeper Blakley Jones (Tuscaloosa, Ala./Holy Spirit Catholic HS) played 45 minutes and finished with three saves. Senior Katherine Kozera (Rome, Ga./Rome HS) and sophomore Erin Huttula (Huntsville, Ala./Huntsville HS) also saw time in goal. Huttula led the Panthers with two saves.
Birmingham-Southern will stay on the road for its next match against Agnes Scott on Wednesday, Sept. 5. Kickoff is scheduled for 4:30 p.m. ET.
