Panthers Battle Scots, Win 2-1 in Double OT

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Birmingham-Southern women's soccer team picked up the win in its first home game of the 2018 season Friday night, taking down Covenant (0-1-2) by a score of 2-1 in double overtime.

A competitive match between the Panthers and Scots could not be decided in regulation, instead requiring two periods of overtime to determine the winner. It would take 106 minutes before BSC's two Choate sisters teamed up to find the golden goal that would deliver the victory for the Panthers.

Covenant was the first on the scoreboard, scoring early on in the game. The Scots' Lizzy Hightower, with an assist from Kailey Burrell, scored the visitor's sole goal of the game in the eighth minute.

The Panthers, after a few chances to equalize with shots-on-goal that were eventually saved, found the breakthrough they were looking for in the 33rd minute. A shot from sophomore Abby Kay Choate (Tifton, Ga./Tift County HS) was blocked by a Covenant defender but the ball fell to the feet of sophomore forward Sydney Barrow (Hoover, Ala./Indian Springs HS), who took the opportunity to slot the ball past the keeper and bury her shot in the back of the net.

The goal was Barrow's fifth of the young season; she leads the team in that category.

Tied at 1-1, BSC and Covenant both had opportunities to take the lead in the remaining 67 minutes, but the defenses on each end of the field kept the game deadlocked through the end of regulation and the first 10 minutes of overtime.

Finally, in the sixth minute of the final overtime period, a through ball by freshman midfielder Emma Choate (Tifton, Ga./Tift County HS) found her older sister, Abby Kay, who slipped her shot past the diving Covenant goalie into the right side of the net for the game-winner.

The goal was Abby Kay Choate's second of the season.

Sophomore goalkeeper Blakley Jones (Tuscaloosa, Ala./Holy Spirit Catholic HS) played every minute in goal for the Panthers, recording four saves.

BSC outshot Covenant 22-9 and led the Scots in corner kicks 5-1.

With the win, the Panthers improve to 3-0 on the year. Birmingham-Southern's next match will put them on the road at Belhaven on Thursday, Sept. 13. Kickoff for the game is slated for 5:30 p.m.
