BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Birmingham-Southern women's soccer team fell in its first Southern Athletic Association contest of the season on Saturday evening, dropping the match to the Hendrix Warriors 2-1.
After a scoreless first half, Hendrix scored two goals in a span of three minutes in the second half to go up 2-0. The Panthers tried to get back in the game and cut the Warriors lead in half with a late goal but could not complete the comeback.
Hendrix scored both goals off free kicks in dangerous areas, opening up the scoring in the 63rd minute and adding another goal directly off a free kick in the 66th minute.
In the 74th minute, BSC got on the scoreboard with a brilliant, long goal from freshman midfielder Amber Thompson (Waxhaw, N.C./Cuthbertson HS) with the assist from sophomore Sydney Barrow (Hoover, Ala./Indian Springs HS).
In the remaining 16 minutes, the Panthers attempted to equalize but could not find the back of the net again before the final whistle.
Senior McKenna Boyd (Versailles, Ky./Woodford County HS) led the Panthers with four shots. Sophomore goalkeeper Blakley Jones (Tuscaloosa, Ala./Holy Spirit Catholic HS) finished the game with six saves.
With the loss, BSC drops to 4-2-1 overall and 0-1 in the SAA. Birmingham-Southern will look to rebound from the loss in its next game against the Mississippi University for Women on Tuesday, Sept. 25. Kickoff is set for 5 p.m. at Goldfarb Field.
