BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Birmingham-Southern women's soccer team hosted Southern Athletic Association rival Berry College on Friday night in a match that ended in a 1-1 draw after two overtime periods.
The Panthers scored a second-half equalizer after going down 1-0 but neither side could find a winning goal in the end, forcing the match to end in a deadlock.
After a scoreless opening 45 minutes, the visitors from Berry opened up the scoring in the 50th minute on an unassisted goal by Vanessa Belanger.
Birmingham-Southern freshman midfielder Amber Thompson (Waxhaw, N.C./Cuthbertson HS) scored the Panthers lone goal of the game eight minutes later to tie the game back up at 1-1. Thompson's goal, her third of the season, came off a cross into the box by fellow freshman Emma Choate (Tifton, Ga./Tift County HS). Choate's assist was her fourth of the year.
Thompson's 59th minute goal would cap the scoring. Sophomore goalkeeper Blakley Jones (Tuscaloosa, Ala./Holy Spirit Catholic HS), who finished the game with 13 saves, kept the Vikings from scoring for the remainder of regulation and 20 minutes of overtime.
With the draw, Birmingham-Southern moves to 6-3-2 overall and 0-2-1 in the SAA.
The Panthers will host the Oglethorpe Stormy Petrels in their next game on Sunday, Oct. 7. Kickoff is scheduled for noon.
