ATLANTA – Three Birmingham-Southern women's soccer student-athletes were named to the All-Southern Athletic Association team, the conference announced Monday.
Two Panthers, sophomore forward Sydney Barrow (Birmingham, Ala./Indian Springs HS) and sophomore goalkeeper Blakley Jones (Tuscaloosa, Ala./Holy Spirit Catholic HS), were selected to the All-SAA Second Team.
Barrow, who started in each of BSC's 16 matches, led the team in goals and points with eight and 19, respectively. She took 45 shots with 27 on-goal for a shot-on-goal percentage of .600. Two of Barrow's goals were game-winners, which was a team high, and she had three assists on the year. This is Barrow's second career All-SAA honor, as she was an Honorable Mention her freshman season.
Jones, another two-time all-conference selection, started in goal in all 16 games for the Panthers, putting in over 1340 minutes between the sticks. She recorded 100 saves, second most in the conference, and finished the year with a .862 save percentage and 1.07 goals-allowed average. Jones also recorded four shutouts, two solo and two combined, and was the SAA Defensive Player of the Week three times this season. Jones earned Second Team honors after being the All-SAA First Team goalkeeper her freshman season.
Rounding out Birmingham-Southern's all-conference selections is sophomore Abby Kay Choate (Tifton, Ga./Tift County HS), who was the SAA Newcomer of the Year and an All-SAA First Team selection her freshman season. This season, Choate, who started 13 matches, scored four goals and co-led the Panthers in assists with five. One of her goals was a game-winner, which came in BSC's 2-1 double-overtime win over Covenant on Sept. 7. She finished the year with 28 total shots.
Birmingham-Southern ended its 2018 campaign with a 7-6-3 overall record and a 1-4-2 record in the SAA. The Panthers season came to a close in the quarterfinal round of the SAA Tournament after a 1-0 defeat at Berry College.
