Women's Tennis downs Centre, 6-3; Men lose to Colonels
BIRMINGHAM, Ala.--The Birmingham-Southern tennis teams hosted conference foe Centre College today at the BSC Tennis Complex, with the women prevailing 6-3 and the men dropping the contest by the same score.
The Panther women move to 9-2 overall and 4-1 in the Southern Athletic Association, while the men fall to 6-6 overall and 2-4 in the SAA.
Despite a loss at one doubles, the women took the other two doubles matches to take a 2-1 lead into singles competition. The team of freshman Sara Cohen and junior Emily Holst earned the 8-5 victory and freshman Lindsey Farrell and junior Terria Punturo paired up for the 8-6 win.
Singles play would be just as successful a venture for the women as they picked up four more points. Victories at two singles from senior Raeann Lamere, three singles from Cohen, four singles from Holst and six singles from Punturo wrapped up the match win.
The men earned a split in singles competition, but could not recover from the three losses in doubles play that opened the match. Senior Sawyer Voges led the singles effort with a victory. He was joined on the victorious side of the ledger with wins at three singles and six singles with wins from freshman Patrick Hire and sophomore Ben Reardon.
Both teams host Sewanee tomorrow at 10 a.m. at the BSC Tennis Complex.
