Panthers open 2012 season with sweeps of Huntingdon, Piedmont

MONTGOMERY, Ala.—The Birmingham-Southern volleyball team opened the 2012 season with two wins today at the Huntingdon College Jubilee in Montgomery, Ala., defeating the host Hawks and Piedmont College both by the score of 3-0.

The Panthers won against Huntingdon by the scores of 25-12, 25-17, 25-13, and defeated Piedmont 25-20, 25-13, 25-23.

Against Huntingdon, sophomore Kelly Foster led with 13 kills and hit .571 for the match, followed by senior Shelby Moore with 12 kills and a .455 attack percentage. Freshman Katie McCormack led the defense with 12 digs, and junior Alex Bothe recorded 10. Senior setter Lauren Reibe led all players with 38 assists.

Against Piedmont, Bothe was impressive with 21 kills, hitting .514 for the match, and posting a double-double with 11 digs. Foster and McCormack led with 14 digs each, and senior Presley Dickson had 12. Reibe also had a double-double with a game-high 42 assists and 11 digs.

The Panthers play twice again tomorrow, facing LaGrange at noon and Mississippi College at 2 p.m.
