JACKSON, Miss.—The Birmingham-Southern volleyball team opened Southern Athletic Association action on Wednesday evening, sweeping Millsaps on the road, 3-0.
The Panthers move to 5-4 overall, while the Majors fall to 6-2. BSC won by the scores of 25-22, 25-21, and 26-24.
BSC fell behind early in the first set, 7-3, before rallying back to take the lead, and the rest of the set was close, with neither team leading by more than two until BSC pulled ahead 20-17, then scored twice more to go up 22-17. Millsaps stayed right on the Panthers' heels, though, out-scoring BSC 5-1 after that to cut it to 23-22. The Panthers were able to put away the last two points, courtesy of a kill by senior Shelby More and a block by Moore and sophomore Meredith Lee, for the set win.
Set two was just as close, with neither team leading by more than two at any point until the Panthers pulled up 20-16. The Majors were able to fight back to cut it to 22-20, but the Panthers scored three straight points down the stretch to go up 2-0 in the match.
The third set started with Millsaps pulling ahead 5-1, and leading by a handful of points almost the entire time. The Majors got to set point, leading BSC 24-20, but the Panthers put together an impressive six-point run - including three kills by sophomore Katie O'Bar and a kill by sophomore Kelly Foster - to end both the set and the match.
The Panthers continue SAA action this weekend on the road, traveling to face Hendrix on Saturday and Rhodes on Sunday. BSC will also take on former conference rival Austin College on Sunday in Memphis.
BSC opens its home slate on Saturday, Sept. 22, against Sewanee at 4 p.m. in Bill Battle Coliseum.
