MEMPHIS, Tenn.—The Birmingham-Southern volleyball team won its third and fourth straight matches today in Memphis, Tenn., defeating Southern Athletic Association rival Rhodes College as well as former conference rival Austin College, both by the score of 3-1.
The Panthers move to 8-4 on the season with the wins.
Against Rhodes, BSC won the first set 25-18, using several runs after trailing for the first part of the set. BSC won the second set 25-12 before the Lynx rebounded with a 25-22 win, scoring five straight points to end the third set. The Panthers came back to clinch the win with a 25-21 victory in the fourth set.
Senior Shelby Moore led the Panthers with 17 kills, hitting .652 with only two errors. Sophomores Meredith Lee and Kelly Foster also had 10 kills each. Senior setter Lauren Reibe dished out 47 assists, and senior libero Presley Dickson recorded 20 digs.
In the second match of the day, BSC faced former SCAC rival Austin College. The Panthers won the first closely-fought set, playing to seven ties before ultimately winning 25-21. The Kangaroos opened the second set with eight straight points and never looked back, winning 25-15, but BSC responded with a strong third set, staying just ahead of Austin the entire time before winning 25-20. Set four started out neck-and-neck, with Austin leading 5-4 before BSC used a 7-1 run to go up 11-6. The Panthers kept the lead for the duration of the set to win 25-18.
Lee led with 15 kills for BSC, while Moore and junior Alex Bothe had 11 kills each. Bothe and Reibe had double-doubles with Bothe recording 14 digs and Reibe tallying 46 assists and 13 digs. Freshman Lauren Bedford led with 18 digs, followed by Dickson with 17 and freshman Katie McCormack with 13. Sophomore Katie O'Bar led with three blocks.
The Panthers are at home for the first time this season next weekend, continuing conference action against Sewanee on Saturday, Sept. 22, at 4 p.m., and Centre on Sunday, Sept. 23, at 1:30 p.m. Both matches will feature live video and a live game tracker.
