Volleyball falls to Millsaps in three for first loss of season

BIRMINGHAM, Ala.—Millsaps handed the Birmingham-Southern volleyball team its first loss of the season Tuesday evening, winning 3-0 in Bill Battle Coliseum in the Southern Athletic Association (SAA) opener for both teams.

BSC falls to 9-1 overall and 0-1 in the SAA, while Millsaps moves to 8-6 overall and 1-0 in the SAA.

After trading points to open the first set and stay neck-and-neck, BSC scored four unanswered points to pull ahead 15-10. Millsaps fought back to tie it up 17-17, and the teams played to four more ties before, after the 22-22 mark, the Majors scored three in a row to win the first set 25-22.

Set two started close, too, up to the 11-11 mark, after which Millsaps put together a 9-2 run to pull up 20-13. The Majors out-scored the Panthers 5-4 after that to win 25-17 and move to 2-0 in the match.

Millsaps pulled ahead 10-6 to open the third set, after which BSC scored four straight points to tie things up 10-10, but the Majors used a five-point run to pull back ahead 15-10. Millsaps stayed a few points ahead of the Panthers for the remainder of the set, winning 25-19 to clinch the match victory and give BSC its first loss of the season.

Senior Alex Bothe led BSC with eight kills and 19 digs. Sophomores Emily Dang and Katie McCormack split time at setter, with Dang dishing out 16 assists and McCormack recording 13. Libero Lauren Bedford had 18 digs to help anchor the defense.

Caroline McKey led Millsaps with 10 kills and 17 digs; three different Majors were in double digits in digs, and Taylor Ziegler led with 10 assists.

The Panthers are at home again this weekend, hosting Rhodes on Saturday at 3 p.m., Hendrix Sunday at 12 p.m., and Agnes Scott Sunday at 2 p.m.
