MEMPHIS, Tenn.—The Birmingham-Southern volleyball team closed out the regular season with two wins on Saturday, defeating both Martin Methodist (3-1) and Mississippi College (3-0) in the Rhodes Classic in Memphis.
The Panthers move to 20-8 on the season, the fifth 20-win season in program history.
BSC split the first two sets against Martin Methodist, winning 25-18 in the first set and then losing 25-20 in the second set. The Panthers came back to win a hard-fought third set, 25-22, before winning the fourth set decisively 25-16 to win the match.
Junior Kathleen Pfitzer led with 13 kills and hit an impressive .476 in the match with only three errors. Senior Alex Bothe recorded her 10th double-double of the year with 10 kills and a team-high 16 digs, and junior Meredith Lee also had 10 kills. Sophomore setter Emily Dang led with 36 assists, and sophomore Katie McCormack had 13. Junior Katie O'Bar led with three blocks.
In the second match of the day against Mississippi College, the Panthers swept the Choctaws, winning 25-19, 25-13, 25-19. Lee led with eight kills, sophomore libero Lauren Bedford led with seven digs, and sophomore Caitlin Lee led with 22 assists.
The Panthers begin post-season play next weekend at the Southern Athletic Association Championship, hosted by top-seeded Berry College. BSC is the fifth seed and will play fourth-seeded Millsaps Friday, Nov. 8 at 8 p.m. Eastern.
