BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Birmingham-Southern women's volleyball team fought tough against Southern Athletic Association rival Hendrix College Sunday before falling 3-1 in Bill Battle Coliseum. The Panthers (7-4, 1-1 SAA) outperformed Hendrix in several categories, but were unable to pull out the win in a match with 40 ties.
Marjorie Ward (Winter Park, Fla./Winter Park HS) and Milea Ray (Alabaster, Ala./Pensacola State) earned double-doubles. Ward led with a match-high 14 kills and earned 21 digs. Ray finished with 10 kills and 23 digs. Jeneva Salter (Madison, Ala./Bob Jones HS) and Julia Denby (Gulf Breeze, Fla./Gulf Breeze HS) also finished with double-figure kills at 11 and 10, respectively.
Defensively, Caroline Johnson (Lucas, Texas/Lovejoy HS) led the back line with 24 digs and Rebecca Erwin (Duluth, Ga./Duluth HS) dominated at the net. She had two solo blocks and assisted on a match-high six others.
BSC is back on the road next. They travel EST to take on Berry College and Oglethorpe University next weekend. The Panthers face Berry on Friday, Sept. 21 at 6 p.m. and then Oglethorpe on Saturday at noon.
