BIRMINGHAM, Ala.—After a hard-fought and successful season, the Birmingham-Southern cross country teams will send 13 runners to compete in the NCAA South/Southeast Regional Championship this Saturday at Christopher Newport University in Newport News, Va.
The women's team was ranked ninth in the region this past season and three runners (sophomore Katie Ann Bass and freshmen Elise Pittman and Shannon Walsh) earned All-Southern Athletic Association honors two weeks ago at the Championship. Bass, Pittman, and Walsh will be joined this weekend by senior teammate Regan Hubbel, juniors Hallie Jordan and Victoria Ports, and sophomore Kelsey Holdbrooks.
Competing on the men's side will be senior Christian Clesi, junior Scotty Wild, sophomores Jordan McKnight and John White, and freshmen Foster Johnstone and Chris Roberts.
"We are all excited about the opportunity to compete at the 2013 NCAA Cross Country Regionals in Newport News," Head Coach Kenneth Cox said. "It is a great way to celebrate the hard work and season that we have had from our athletes, and to continue the positive momentum that we have experienced. The SAA is well represented in the South/Southeast Region and we will have a chance to race against some of the best teams in the nation as well."
Fellow SAA members Berry, Rhodes, Sewanee, and Millsaps are also competing at the Regional Championship, as well as No. 12 Trinity (Texas) on the women's side.
The women's 6K race begins at 11 a.m. Eastern, and the men's 8K will start at 12:30 p.m. Eastern. For more information, visit the Regional web site.
