LEXINGTON, Ky. - The Birmingham-Southern women's tennis team opened up day one of the Transylvania Invitational with wins over Greenville University and Covenant College.
Match one: The Panthers swept doubles play to start off the match. The No. 2 duo of Anna Beth Giles and Anna Cate Weeks and the No. 3 pair of Anna Marie Bentley and Meg Griffin both finished with 8-5 victories. Phoebe Shapard and Isabella Lambert defeated their opponents with an 8-6 win.
Heading into singles play with a 3-0 lead, the Panthers continued their momentum and took four out of six matches. Courts three, four and five finished in straight sets in favor of Birmingham-Southern. Phoebe Shapard won in a tough three set match, winning the final one 13-11.

Match two: The Panthers fell short early on in the match, only earning one point out of doubles play. The No. 1 pair of Phoebe Shapard and Isabella Lambert earned the victory for BSC with an 8-4 win.
With a close match at stake, Birmingham-Southern looked to make a comeback. Courts one, two, and three finished in straight sets in favor of the Panthers. Phoebe Shapard won 6-2 and 6-0, Isabella Lambert took hers 6-4 and 6-3, and Anna Marie Bentley at 6-2 and 6-3. In a three set match, Anna Cate Weeks took her opponent down 10-3 in the tiebreaker set. The Panthers defeated the Scots at a close 5-4.
