ATLANTA, Ga. - The Birmingham-Southern Women's basketball team drops the second game of the weekend to a good Oglethorpe team.
A fastbreak basket by Montanna Harris gave the Panthers a four point lead and a 6-2 start to the game. It was a tight 1st quarter with a couple of lead changes and four different scorers for the Panthers. The Petrels led 18-17 heading in the first intermission. Oglethorpe, needing a win after losing two straight conference games, came out on fire with 10 2nd quarter points from Keimarya Rivera. The Panthers would stay step for step with Oglethorpe matching them every time they took the lead. In fact, BSC led by as many as four points in that second quarter. Going into the break the game was all tied at 37.
Birmingham-Southern has lost seven of their last eight games and really needed this win to jump up the SAA standings.
Maya Cable continued her scoring with a 3 point shot to start the second half. The Panthers needed to keep the lead as the game was beginning to get later into the 3rd. Oglethorpe scored 10 straight points to erase the three point lead that BSC had. Late in the 3rd quarter The Petrels took an eight point lead, before the Panthers came alive and scored seven points in 1:29 seconds of game time. A layup by Keimarya Rivera ending the scoring in the 3rd quarter and gave the Petrels a 54-49 lead.
Montana Harris helped keep the Panthers in the game with 10 points through the first three quarters. Four second half three point shots by
Maya Cable also kept the Panthers in the game. One of those 3's came at the 7:00 minute mark of the final quarter and gave Oglethorpe a 56-54 lead. The Petrels ended the game on a 16-5 run holding BSC to a 22% field goal percentage in the last quarter. The great defensive showing from Oglethorpe allowed BSC just 59 points.
