BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The Birmingham-Southern women's basketball team looked to be coming up short against SAA foe Oglethorpe, but sophomore guard
Sheraton Foster's game-winning three with two seconds remaining gave the Panthers a 66-65 win.
After a tough loss to Berry on Friday, BSC hoped to close out the weekend with a victory. After both teams scored five points to start the afternoon, 'Southern went on a 6-0 run in a stretch where they held the Stormy Petrels scoreless for 4:13. Oglethorpe cut the lead to two with 2:26 left in the opening quarter, but BSC maintained the lead through the opening 10 minutes and went into the second period with a 17-14 lead.
Imani Thompson and
Maya Cable knocked down threes in the opening minutes of the second quarter, but the teams were deadlocked at 23 with 5:26 remaining in the half. The Panthers then surged on a 10-2 run to take control of the contest. The Stormy Petrels trimmed the deficit back to three late, but
Sheraton Foster drained a timely three-pointer to put the Panthers up 36-30 at the break.
After a smooth jumper from
Summer Killin to start the second half, the Stormy Petrels and Panthers started to trade buckets. However, sharpshooter
Maya Cable continued to bury threes to slowly extend the lead. 'Southern led by as many as 12 in the third period, but a late 8-2 run by Oglethorpe kept them within striking distance only down six with 10 minutes to play.
Needing to finish strong, the Panthers got off to an excellent start defensively only allowing five points on two made field goals in the opening half of the fourth quarter. In addition, BSC continued to be efficient offensively and stretched the lead back to 12 with 4:32 remaining in the game after a Dekerriya Daniel layup from
Sheraton Foster. The Panthers looked to be in the driver's seat, but the Stormy Petrels did not go away. They then went on a 10-0 run in a little over two minutes of game time to pull back within two.
Imani Thompson made a pair of free throws to put her team back up four, but Oglethorpe would then go on another run. A 7-0 run in 51 seconds saw BSC trail for the first time in the game with 1:05 remaining.
Maya Cable made a quick two-point shot with 43 seconds remaining, and Oglethorpe then went one of two from the line. The Stormy Petrels led 65-63 with 16 seconds remaining with the Panthers in possession of the ball. After a timeout, the play seemed to be busted, but
Sheraton Foster found space for a three. After losing her defender, the sophomore guard took a deep three and knocked it down with two seconds left to go up one. BSC then made a big stop on the defense end to complete the late comeback, 66-65.
