Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

PANTHERS FALL LATE IN FOURTH TO TIGERS

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - After climbing back to take a lead into the fourth quarter, the Birmingham-Southern women's basketball team fell in a heart-breaker to Sewanee on Sunday.

The first quarter of action was back-and-forth with neither team gaining more than a four-point lead. Halfway through the opening period, the Tigers found themselves up two before extending their lead to four on their next possession. The Panthers did not allow the Sewanee lead to stretch further. Impressive guard play from Maya Cable and Sheraton Foster pulled 'Southern back to a tie at the conclusion of the first. The duo scored 15 of the team's 19 points in the first 10 minutes.

The Tigers broke the tie with a 7-0 run to start the second quarter in a little over two minutes of action. BSC then went on a 9-2 run to tie the score once again after a Lauryn Towns transition three. The Panthers earned their first lead of the second quarter, 33-32, with 3:18 left in the half, but Sewanee closed out the half on an 11-4 run to lead by six at the break, 43-37.

The start of the third quarter was a struggle for both teams offensively with only nine combined points in the first six minutes. Trailing by three, BSC started to pick up steam. The Panthers went on a 10-2 run to close out the third quarter courtesy of Lauryn Towns and Sheraton Foster who combined for eight points and two assists in the 3:53 stretch. After shooting struggles early in the period, 'Southern went into the final ten minutes up 53-48 after winning the quarter 16-5.

Needing to close the game out, 'Southern got off to a great start in the final quarter of play. After forcing two turnovers as a team, Ajailah Ogiemwonyi forced another with a steal and layup to give her team the largest lead of the afternoon, 61-52. Sings looked to be pointing to a BSC win, but the Panthers suddenly got cold from the field. 'Southern was not able to stretch the lead but with 3:30 remaining, Sheraton Foster knocked down two free throws to stay in control up seven. The Tigers then caught fire offensively and went on a 10-0 run in the final few minutes of play to steal the W in Birmingham, 68-65.
