BIRMINGHAM, Ala.—Birmingham-Southern
College inducted six more former student-athletes into its Sports
Hall of Fame Friday evening at the annual Hall of Fame Banquet in
Norton Great Hall on the BSC campus. It was the 34th class to be
inducted, dating back to the first class in 1981.
The members of the BSC Sports Hall of Fame class of 2014 are:
David Horne (Baseball '06), Paul Rogers (Men's Tennis '89), Reba
Ross Hudson (Women's Basketball '08), Kirby Sevier (Men's
Basketball '68), Jill Stupiansky (Women's Golf '07), and Russell
Thompson (Men's Basketball '71).
Horne was a standout pitcher for the Panthers, helping BSC win
the Big South Conference championship in 2006 as a senior, going
10-3 on the mound that season, as well as in 2004 as a sophomore.
He also was the winning hurler in BSC's only NCAA Championship
appearance, a 2004 game against Middle Tennessee State. Horne still
stands as the third-winningest pitcher in BSC baseball history with
27 wins.
Rogers made three NAIA National Tournament appearances (1986,
1987, 1989) in his time on the Hilltop and was the 1987 conference
champion at number one singles. He was a 1987 NAIA All-District
XXVII selection, and 1987 and 1989 NAIA Honorable Mention
All-America in singles and doubles.
Hudson made women's basketball program history as a senior in
2008 when she became the first player to average a double-double
with 20.2 points and 12.3 rebounds per game. She scored 1,103
career points and was a 2007 First-Team All-Big South selection,
and she was also a two-time Big South Academic Honor Roll
member.
Sevier was a three-year letterman for the men's basketball team
from 1966-1968, and was also a member of the 1967 baseball team. He
was a top-five BSC Intramural Student-Athlete, and went on to be a
founding partner of the Maynard, Cooper & Gale law firm.
Stupiansky was the Big South Conference individual women's golf
champion in 2007 as a senior, and was third in 2006, helping the
Panthers win back-to-back conference titles in 2006 and 2007. She
was named Big South Scholar Athlete of the Year her junior and
senior seasons, and was a NGCA Scholar All-American in 2007.
Thompson was co-MVP and Team Captain of the 1970-71 men's
basketball team and still stands in the top 10 of BSC's scoring and
scoring average, and ranks first on the career free throws and free
throw percentage lists. He was named to the Alabama All-Small
College Team in 1971. In a game against Florence State that season,
Thompson scored 25 points - all on free throws, going 25-of-28 from
the line without attempting a single field goal. Thompson passed
away in 1992 and was inducted posthumously.
The six inductees will also be recognized at halftime of
tomorrow's Homecoming football game against Sewanee, which kicks
off at 1 p.m. on Battle Field at Panther Stadium.
