HOOVER, Ala. – The Birmingham-Southern baseball team outlasted the North Park Vikings 6-5 at the Hoover Metropolitan Complex on Saturday night.
The Panthers jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the third inning after a series of BSC hits and North Park errors and wild pitches allowed sophomore Preston Munns (Marietta, Ga./Lassiter HS), senior A.J. Hunt (Memphis, Tenn./Memphis Univ. School) and sophomore Cole Steadman (Birmingham, Ala./Briarwood Christian) to come around.
The Vikings tied up the game with a run in the sixth and two runs in the seventh, but the Panthers answered with three more runs in the bottom of the seventh to double their advantage. In the inning, a single by Steadman scored Hunt before another single by sophomore Brian Williams (Marietta, Ga./Lassiter HS) scored Dawson Pfost (Hickory Flat, Ga./Sequoyah HS) and Steadman, capping the scoring for BSC.
North Park made it interesting in the top of the eighth inning, scoring two runs to come within one of the Panthers, but senior Richie Misischia (Dothan, Ala./Regis HS) got out of the jam and closed out the game.
Junior right-hander Andy Hammond (Oxford, Ala./Oxford HS) got the start on the mound for BSC and pitched well, throwing five innings, allowing no runs off just two hits and struck out five batters. He did not get a decision.
Misischia, who picked up the win, pitched two and one-third innings, allowing two runs off two hits and struck out three. He improved to 3-0 on the mound this season.
Birmingham-Southern will wrap up the weekend against Thomas More on Sunday, Feb. 24 at 2 p.m. Due to the weather, the game will be played at the Hoover Met Complex in Hoover, Ala.
