CONWAY, Ark. – The No. 23-ranked Birmingham-Southern baseball team split its doubleheader with Southern Athletic Association foe Hendrix College on Saturday.
The Panthers won the first game 3-1 in 11 innings before falling 4-1 to the Warriors in the second game.
Senior Jake Cook (Oxford, Ala./Oxford HS) got the start on the mound for the Panthers in the series opener, pitching eight innings and allowing just one earned run off five hits. He struck out four Hendrix batters in his outing.
Cook's performance put the Panthers in a good position for their offense to win it; however, through nine innings, both teams had just one run to their credit.
BSC's first run came in the top of the seventh when Tyler Wise (Birmingham, Ala./Spain Park HS) tied it up with a solo home run to lead off the inning.
Tied at 1-1 after nine innings, the Panthers and Warriors went to extra innings where BSC would go on to win in the 11th after back-to-back RBI singles by Tyler Hamel (Atlanta, Ga./Alpharetta HS) and Wise.
Up 3-1 in the bottom of the inning, senior lefty Richie Misischia (Dothan, Ala./Regis HS) closed out the game and earned his fifth win of the season.
Birmingham-Southern suffered the 4-1 loss in game two as the Warriors scored runs in the first, third and fourth innings.
John Michael Shirley (Mobile, Ala./UMS-Wright HS) got the start and was on the hook for the loss, pitching five innings and allowing four runs—two earned—off five hits. He struck out five batters.
The Panthers lone run came in the fifth inning after a bases-loaded RBI walk by Will Toner (Atlanta, Ga./Marist HS).
Following the doubleheader, Birmingham-Southern is 17-7 overall and 5-3 in the SAA. BSC and Hendrix will wrap up the series on Sunday at 1 p.m.
