BSC Routs Berry 12-2 in Sunday Rubber Match

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Birmingham-Southern baseball team run-ruled the Berry College Vikings 12-2 in eight innings on Sunday to take the Southern Athletic Association series 2-1 and improve to 20-9, 7-5 on the season.

After being run-ruled 17-0 by the Vikings on Saturday, the Panthers returned the favor on Sunday afternoon, scoring runs in the first, third, fifth and eighth innings, including five runs in both the fifth and eighth.

Senior Richie Misischia (Dothan, Ala./Regis HS) knocked in BSC's first run of the day, hitting an RBI double that sent sophomore outfielder Cole Steadman (Birmingham, Ala./Briarwood Christian HS) across the plate in the first inning.

Again, the Misischia and Steadman combination accounted for BSC's second run in the third inning, this time with a single by Misischia pushing his teammate across home plate.

In the Panthers first big inning, the five-run fifth, Brian Williams (Marietta, Ga./Lassiter HS) got BSC going with an RBI single. Tyler Wise (Birmingham, Ala./Spain Park HS) followed it up with his own RBI single that scored Misischia. But it was a crushed three-run homer by Will Toner (Atlanta, Ga./Marist HS) that did the most damage, giving BSC a 7-2 lead as he sent the ball over the left field wall.

The Panthers were able to wrap the game up early in the eighth inning when they scored five more runs. Alfredo Granier (Atlanta, Ga./Holy Innocents' Episcopal School) hit an RBI single which was followed up by another single and a bases-loaded hit-by-pitch, which put the Panthers up 9-2.

Wise then sealed the game with a crushed three-run RBI triple that landed in right center field, giving BSC the 10-run lead it needed to end the game 12-2.

Junior Andy Hammond (Oxford, Ala./Oxford HS) got the start and pitched five innings, allowed two runs off three hits while striking out three. Hammond was credited with the win, his third of the season. Junior southpaw Hanan Mauldin (Florence, Ala./Florence HS) came in and finished out the game, allowing just one hit in three innings.

Birmingham-Southern will travel to Emory for its next game on Tuesday, April 2 before coming back to the Hilltop for an SAA series against Oglethorpe on April 5-6.
