Baseball Sweeps Sewanee to Cap Regular Season

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Birmingham-Southern baseball team swept the Sewanee Tigers 14-4 and 3-1 on BSC's Senior Day on Saturday, improving to 29-11 overall and 15-6 in the Southern Athletic Association.

Game 1
The Panthers routed the Tigers in the opening game of the day, tacking on multiple runs in the last five innings to end the game in seven.

Four different BSC players had multi-hit games, including sophomore Cole Steadman (Birmingham, Ala./Briarwood Christian) and senior Tyler Wise (Birmingham, Ala./Spain Park HS), who each had three hits in the game.

Wise also had three RBI in the game, two of which came off a home run in the bottom of the sixth inning.

The Panthers were eventually able to run-rule Sewanee after a Cory Price (Hoover, Ala./UAH) two-RBI double gave BSC the final 14-4 lead.

Senior John Michael Shirley (Mobile, Ala./UMS-Wright Prep) got the start, pitching three innings. Junior Hanan Mauldin (Florence, Ala./Florence HS) came in in relief, also pitching three innings, to become the pitcher of record and get the win.

The win also gave head coach Jan Weisberg his 400th career win at Birmingham-Southern.

Game 2
There was less offense in game two, but Birmingham-Southern pulled out the winning, plating three runs off four hits to win 3-1.

Junior Andy Hammond (Oxford, Ala./Oxford HS) got the start on the mound for BSC and tossed five innings, allowing one run off three hits. He earned the win with his performance, his sixth win of the season.

Senior Richie Misischia (Dothan, Ala./Regis HS) came in in relief in the seven-inning game to pick up the save, his fifth.

Offensively, the Panthers were led by sophomore Brian Williams (Marietta, Ga./Lassiter HS), who had a hit, a run and two RBI. Williams launched a solo home run in the first inning to give BSC its initial lead and then had a sacrifice fly in the fifth inning to give the Panthers the go-ahead run.

After Saturday's sweep, the Panthers claimed the title of SAA co-regular season champions alongside Hendrix College and clinched the No. 2 seed in the SAA Tournament. BSC will host one of the two double-elimination pools April 26-28. Brackets, game times and matchups will be announced at a later time.
