BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The No. 15 Birmingham-Southern baseball team is competing for a national championship at the NCAA Division III World Series beginning on Friday.
Birmingham-Southern (39-13) eliminated No. 14 LaGrange 3-2 in the NCAA Regional and No. 17 Coe College 2-0 in the Super Regional to advance to the World Series, the first appearance in program history.
The World Series, an eight-team, two-pod, double-elimination tournament, will be played at Perfect Game Field at Veterans Memorial Stadium in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, May 31 through June 5.
The Panthers will make their World Series debut on Friday, May 31 at 7:45 p.m. CT when they face the Heidelberg University Student Princes (35-13), the Ohio Athletic Conference runner-up.
Heidelberg defeated No. 9 Adrian College in the Regional before eliminating No. 20 Wooster in the Super Regional and move on to the World Series. The meeting between the Panthers and Student Princes will be the first.
Regardless of the result against Heidelberg, BSC will move on to face either No. 7 Babson (38-8) or No. 22 Johns Hopkins (34-11), the other two teams in BSC's pod. The Panthers have never played against Babson or Johns Hopkins on the baseball field.
Should Birmingham-Southern win and advance to the championship series, the Panthers will face the winner of the other bracket which contains No. 6 Chapman (38-11), Washington and Jefferson (36-10), No. 18 Webster (37-11), and No. 23 UMass Boston (35-12).
Coming into the World Series, BSC's hottest bat is in the hands of senior first baseman Tyler Wise (Birmingham, Ala./Spain Park HS), who is currently on a 10-game hitting streak. Wise, during the postseason, is batting .500 with 17 hits, 12 RBI, and 11 runs scored.
In the last seven games, eight different Panthers (with at least 10 at-bats) are hitting .300 or better. Tyler Hamel (Atlanta, Ga./Alpharetta HS), who is hitting .355 in the postseason, is tied with Wise for the most RBIs, 12, in that span.
On the mound, the Panthers will look to ace starters Jake Cook (Oxford, Ala./Oxford HS), John Michael Shirley (Mobile, Ala./UMS-Wright Prep) and Andy Hammond (Oxford, Ala./Oxford HS), as well as relievers Hanan Mauldin (Florence, Ala./Florence HS), Robbie Lively (Helena, Ala./Southern Union), Tristan Harvin (Dothan, Ala./Houston Academy) and Richie Misischia (Dothan, Ala./Regis HS).
