Shufford, 16 Panthers Earn All-SAA Honors

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – After posting its most wins since 2012 and finishing one game away from a conference title, Birmingham-Southern football saw 17 Panthers earn All-Southern Athletic Association honors, headlined by 2019 Offensive Player of the Year Robert Shufford (McKenzie, Ala./McKenzie HS).

"We are thrilled that we have such strong representation in the voting," said Head Coach Tony Joe White.  "There are so many extremely talented players in the SAA.  The recognition speaks to the respect other programs have for our team and coaches.  We appreciate them taking notice of our players and their accomplishments."

This is the most All-SAA nods in program history and the fifth consecutive year BSC has earned a player of the year award.

Shufford is the Panthers' first SAA Offensive Player of the Year.  He broke the conference and program single-season rushing records this year among many others.  His 1,834 total yards is the best in the country.  He leads the nation in three categories, the league in eight, and is ranked nationally for 11 stats total.

Joining him on first team offense were Mike Benning (Chattanooga, Tenn./Baylor School), Austin Lewter (Tanner, Ala./Tanner HS), and Spencer Scofield (Collierville, Tenn./St. George's Independent School).  Benning finished the season second on the team in receptions.  Lewter, a team captain this year, and Scofield were leaders on an offensive line that was named to the D3football.com Team of the Week.

Earning defensive first-team all-conference were Wes Guilford (Atlanta, Ga./Stockbridge HS) and Garrett Stevens (Social Circle, Ga./Eastside HS).  Guilford ranked 18th in the country for passes defended and led the league.  Stevens led the team with 66 tackles and finished top 10 in the conference.  Myles Myers (Alpharetta, Ga./Johns Creek HS) and Ivan Villageois (Montgomery, Ala/Saint James School) earned second-team honors.  Myers was second on the team in tackles and Villageois, a team captain this season, was third in tackles.

Nine Panthers were named Honorable Mention.  Derrick Maddox (Tuscaloosa, Ala./Paul W. Bryant HS), Cole Marell (Bonifay, Fla./Holmes County HS), Trevor Oakes (Somerville, Ala./Hartselle HS), Chandler Pearce Lakeland, Fla./Lake Gibson HS), and Justin Robertson (McDonough, Ga./Eagles Landing HS) represented the offense.  On the other side of the ball, DJ Albright (Alpharetta, Ga./Milton HS), Jimmy Anderson (Tuscaloosa, Ala./West Alabama), Corey Robinson (Alabaster, Ala./Kingwood Christian School), and Deminio Williams (Saraland, Ala./Saraland HS) rounded out the honors.
