BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Junior Robert Shufford (McKenzie, Ala./McKenzie HS) of Birmingham-Southern football recently became the second Panther in program history to be an undisputed All-American. The running back was named First-Team Associated Press Division III All-America to round out a year full of honors.
Shufford was also voted First-Team All-America by the American Football Coaches Association, was named D3football.com South Region Offensive Player of the Year, earned first-team all-region honors, and was a Gagliardi Trophy finalist, the award presented to the top NCAA Division III football student-athlete.
He finished the year as the NCAA statistical champion for both all-purpose yards and rushing yards per game. He ranked nationally 12 total categories, leading the Southern Athletic Association in eight. The SAA Offensive Player of the Year ran for 100+ yards in nine consecutive games, putting up over 200 yards four times this past season. His 1,834 rush yards set a new conference and program single-season rushing record. He also broke the program single-season records for rushing attempts, yards per rush, yards per game, total offense per play, all-purpose yards, all-purpose yards per game and scoring.
Shufford ran for a career-best 282 yards and tied the program record three rushing touchdows on the road at Centre College this year. A first-team all-conference selection, Shufford was named D3football.com Team of the Week running back four times.
