BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Birmingham-Southern men's soccer team and the Berry College Vikings drew 1-1 in a Southern Athletic Association matchup at Preston Goldfarb Field on Friday night.
After taking a 1-0 lead early, the Panthers conceded a goal in the second half, ultimately leading to a deadlock between the two sides when the final whistle blew.
In the 14th minute, senior defender Luke Hambleton (Fort Walton Beach, Fla./Choctawhatchee HS) scored BSC's lone goal, a header that came courtesy of a well-struck corner kick by senior midfielder Brett Feringa (Covington, La./St. Paul's HS).
The goal was Hambleton's sixth of the season, tied for the team high along with junior Ryan Hepp (Homewood, Ala./Homewood HS).
The Panthers would take the 1-0 lead into the halftime break, but after holding the lead for over 30 minutes, Berry finally found a breakthrough and a goal to tie the game up 1-1 in the 58th minute.
Locked in a 1-1 stalemate, the Panthers and Vikings continued to battle through the remainder of regulation and two overtime periods but neither team could find another goal in the end.
BSC goalkeeper Galen Curry (Birmingham, Ala./Spain Park HS) finished the game with 11 saves.
Birmingham-Southern will look to keep its four-game unbeaten streak alive in its next game when the Oglethorpe Stormy Petrels come to the Hilltop on Sunday, Oct. 7. Kickoff for the game is tentatively set to start at 2 p.m.
