Swimming and Diving competes against West Florida, Southwestern

PENSACOLA, Fla.—The Birmingham-Southern swimming and diving teams returned to action after the holiday break by taking on West Florida and Southwestern University on Friday at the University of West Florida.

The men competed only against Southwestern and defeated the Pirates 171.00-113.00, turning in 11 first-place finishes. The women lost to Southwestern 156.00-121.00, and to UWF 181.00-91.00.

Highlights on the men's side included sophomore Caleb Riggs winning the 100- and 200-yard breaststroke as well as the 200-yard IM. Senior Wil Cushman won the 200- and 500-yard freestyle, and sophomore Wil Barton won the 1,000-yard freestyle and 200-yard backstroke. Senior Drew Priede won the 100-yard freestyle and 200-yard butterfly and junior Jordan McKnight won the 1-meter diving, and the 400-yard freestyle relay team also placed first, consisting of Priede, Barton, Cushman, and sophomore Luke Huffstutler).

On the women's side, freshman Chelsea Chamblee was second in the 50- and 100-yard freestyle, and sophomore Sarah Catherine Murphy was second in the 500- and 1,000-yard freestyle. Freshman Heather Heacock also finished second in the 200-yard backstroke, and freshman Hannah Sisler was second in the 200-yard breaststroke.

The Panthers were schedule to return to Birmingham this weekend to host Alabama on Saturday at the Birmingham CrossPlex, but the meet has been canceled due to malfunctioning equipment at the venue.
