Men Top Rhodes In Season Opener, Women Finish Second

MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The Birmingham-Southern men's swimming team defeated Rhodes College 164-88 at the University of Memphis pool to open the 2016-17 season.  The Panthers won eight different events en route to their first victory of the year.


There were two individual women's on the side, but the Panthers fell 180-81.


Both Wil Barton (Memphis, Tenn./St. George's Independent School) and Nico Medina (Davis, Fla./American Heritage HS) won two individual events.  Barton placed first in the 200 free and the 200 back.  Medina won the 1,000 free and 100 fly.


Noah Young (Clinton, Miss./Clinton HS), Luke Huffstutler (Odenville, Ala./Heritage Christian Academy), Will Retersdorf (Spring Hill, Tenn./Independence HS), and Caleb Riggs (Enterprise, Ala./Peninsula HS) won the 200 medley relay.


Young also won the 100 back, while Huffstutler took the 500 free.  Justin Staab (Raleigh, N.C./Millbrook HS) and Scott Taylor (Arab, Ala./Arab HS) won their events as well. Stabb won the 200 fly and Taylor the 100 IM.


Chelsea Chamblee (Boaz, Ala./Boaz HS) and Jenna Luth (Pensacola, Fla./Booker T. Washington HS) were the women's individual winners.  Chamblee took the 50 free and Luth the 1,000 free.


The Panthers continue on the road Saturday, Oct. 8 when they head to the Derby City Invite in Louisville, Ky.  The meet will be held at the University of Louisville pool.
