BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Birmingham-Southern women's soccer team picked up a 1-0 midweek win against Belhaven on Thursday night.
A first half goal from BSC gave the home side the lead, which it held on to for the remainder of the match to improve to 2-3-1 on the season.
Junior midfielder Abby Kay Choate (Tifton, Ga./Tift County HS) scored what would prove to be the game-winning goal for the Panthers in the 32nd minute. Freshman Halle Morton (Knoxville, Tenn./The King's Academy) assisted on the play, passing the ball back into the box for Choate, who scored her second goal of 2019.
Birmingham-Southern played on its front foot in the first half but was forced to defend against a determined Belhaven attack in the final 45 minutes in order to maintain the shutout. The Blazers took over a dozen shots in the second half, seven of which were shots on goal.
Junior goalkeeper Blakley Jones (Tuscaloosa, Ala./Holy Spirit Catholic HS) made nine saves in the match, including the seven in the second half, earning her first solo clean sheet of the season.
The Panthers will look to continue their winning streak when Wesleyan comes to the Hilltop on Tuesday, Sept. 17. Kickoff for the game is set for 6 p.m.
