BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Birmingham-Southern women's soccer team earned its first Southern Athletic Association win of the 2019 campaign on Saturday afternoon, downing the Rhodes Lynx at Goldfarb Field.
In a conference match shortened by lightning in the area, the Panthers struck twice in the second half to pick up the 2-0 win and send the Lynx home with their first SAA loss.
Weathering a persistent Rhodes attack in the first half and holding a minority of possession throughout, the Panthers took advantage of their own limited opportunities in the second half.
Freshman Hannah Daoust (Mobile, Ala./McGill-Toolen Catholic HS) scored BSC's opening goal in the 64th minute, smashing a ball from outside the 18-yard box over the Rhodes goalie into the net for her second goal of 2019. Amber Thompson (Waxhaw, N.C./Cuthbertson HS) assisted on the play.
Just a few minutes later, in the 68th minute, junior forward Sydney Barrow (Birmingham, Ala./Indian Springs HS) found herself on the end of an Abby Kay Choate (Tifton, Ga./Tift County HS) through ball, which she used to beat the keeper and double the Panthers' lead, 2-0.
Barrow has scored or assisted on a goal in each of the last five games.
In the 81st minute, the head referee sent both teams inside because of lightning in the area. After a delay, the match was suspended. With 70 minutes having been played, the match went final, and the Panthers improved to 6-3-2 and 1-0-1 in the SAA.
Junior goalkeeper Blakley Jones (Tuscaloosa, Ala./Holy Spirit Catholic HS) recorded nine saves and improved to 4-3-2 in goal.
Birmingham-Southern will travel to Oglethorpe University for its next match on Friday, Oct. 11. Kickoff for the match against the Stormy Petrels is set for 3:30 p.m.
