BSC Defeats Oglethorpe 4-3 in Double Overtime

ATLANTA – The Birmingham-Southern women's soccer team captured a 4-3 overtime win at Southern Athletic Association rival Oglethorpe on Friday, improving to 2-0-1 in the conference.

Four different Panthers scored in the one-goal victory with freshman Abby Walker (Hickory, N.C./Fred T. Foard HS) scoring the decisive game-winning "golden goal" in the second overtime period.

BSC opened up the scoring at the 24-minute mark. Freshman Hannah Daoust (Mobile, Ala./McGill-Toolen Catholic HS) scored the first goal of the game off a free kick by fellow first year Brenna Avery (Lakeland, Fla./Tenoroc HS).

Up 1-0, the Panthers took the lead into the halftime break.

In the second half, the Stormy Petrels grabbed the momentum with two unanswered goals in the 55th and 58th minutes, taking a 2-1 lead over BSC.

Freshman Gabby Bernal (Odenville, Ala./John Carroll Catholic HS) equalized for the Panthers in the 73rd minute, making it 2-2 after a second assist by Avery.

Oglethorpe retook the lead once again in the 81st minute, but Abby Kay Choate (Tifton, Ga./Tift County HS) pulled the Panthers back with a headed goal with less than two minutes left in regulation. Junior Sydney Barrow (Birmingham, Ala./Indian Springs HS) recorded the assist.

Level at 3-3, the Panthers and Stormy Petrels went to overtime. After a goalless first overtime period, the game-winner came in the 102nd minute. A cross from the right by Barrow found Walker, who found the back of the net for the winner. The goal was Walker's fifth of the season and her first career game-winner. The assist was Barrow's second of the game and her fourth of the season.

Junior goalkeeper Blakley Jones (Tuscaloosa, Ala./Holy Spirit Catholic HS) recorded five saves in the match and improved to 5-3-2.

The Panthers and Stormy Petrels were nearly even on shots with 20 for Oglethorpe and 16 for BSC. The home side ended with eight shots on goal while BSC had seven.
