MOUNT BERRY, Ga. – The Birmingham-Southern women's soccer team picked up its eighth win of the season, beating Southern Athletic Association rival Berry 2-0 on the road on Sunday.
The Panthers, riding a nine-game unbeaten streak, scored a goal in each half and kept a clean sheet to secure their third-straight win.
BSC opened up the scoring early in the game, grabbing the advantage in the third minute. Freshman forward Gabby Bernal (Odenville, Ala./John Carroll Catholic HS) scored the match's first goal, finding the back of net with help from an assist by junior Sydney Barrow (Birmingham, Ala./Indian Springs HS).
Bernal's goal was her ninth, the team leader in the category. Barrow's assist was her fifth, also a team high.
After taking the slim 1-0 lead into the halftime break, the Panthers took the opportunity to double their lead in the 70th minute. Junior Lettie Lundy (Mt. Pleasant, S.C./Wando HS) was credited with the goal, her first of the season, after the ball just sneaked past the Viking defense and over the line.
Up 2-0 with 20 minutes to play, the Panther defense – as it had for the previous 70 minutes – denied the Berry attackers to confirm the shutout.
Goalkeeper Blakley Jones (Tuscaloosa, Ala./Holy Spirit Catholic HS) played all 90 minutes, making three saves in the match. The clean sheet for the junior marks her third solo shutout of the season.
Berry outshout BSC 13-8 in the game, but the Panthers put five of their shots on target compared to the Vikings' three shots on goal.
With the win, Birmingham-Southern improves to 8-3-2 overall and 3-0-1 in the SAA. The Panthers have not lost a match since a 3-2 defeat to UT-Dallas on Sept. 6. BSC will host No. 12 Centre in its next match on Friday, Oct. 18.
