JACKSON, Miss. – The Birmingham-Southern women's soccer team wrapped the 2019 regular season with a 4-0 road shutout of Millsaps on Saturday.
The Panthers scored two goals in each half against their Southern Athletic Association opponent, improving to 9-5-2 overall and 4-2-1 in the conference.
Junior Abby Kay Choate (Tifton, Ga./Tift County HS) led BSC and scored twice against the Majors, her first multi-goal match of the season. The midfielder opened the scoring in the 15th minute and then gave the Panthers a 3-0 lead with her brace in the 63rd minute. Freshman Brenna Avery (Lakeland, Fla./Tenoroc HS) assisted on Choate's second goal.
Bernal's unassisted goal came in the 27th minute, giving BSC a 2-0 lead heading into halftime. Bernal's goal was her team-high 10th of the season. Morton's unassisted goal, her third, capped the scoring in the 87th minute.
Junior goalkeeper Blakley Jones (Tuscaloosa, Ala./Holy Spirit Catholic HS) got the win in goal, recording seven saves. Jones and Erin Huttula (Huntsville, Ala./Huntsville HS) combined for the shutout.
Birmingham-Southern will host a quarterfinal match of the SAA Tournament on Saturday, Nov. 2. Time and opponent will be announced at a later time.
