Birmingham, Ala. – The Birmingham-Southern women's volleyball team earned its third straight trip to the Southern Athletic Association tournament championship Saturday with its 3-0 win over Sewanee in Bill Battle Coliseum. BSC (24-5) will face No. 9 Berry College at 2 p.m. on Sunday.
Alyssa Coats (Nolensville, Tenn./Nolensville HS), Milea Ray (Alabaster, Ala./Pensacola State), and Ansleigh Dailey (Daphne, Ala./Bayside Academy) earned double-doubles in the win. Coats finished with a match-high 13 kills and 14 digs. Ray earned 11 kills and 13 digs, respectively. Also earning double-digit kills was Julia Denby (Gulf Breeze, Fla./Gulf Breeze HS) at 12. Reilly Vought (Spanish Fort, Ala./Spanish Fort HS) and Dailey combined for 26 assists to spread the offense.
The Panthers defense continued to play a key roll in their success. Led by Caroline Johnson (Lucas, Texas/Lovejoy HS) who earned a match-high 17 digs, five finished in double-digits. Julia Shoemake (Huntsville, Ala./The Randolph School) and Dailey also picked up 10 digs each.
This is the third consecutive time BSC will face the Vikings in the finals, but their first time as the top seed. The Panthers have defeated a ranked Berry team twice this season. The first was in five sets at then No. 5 Berry's house on September 20. The second was a 3-1 win over a No. 6 Berry in Birmingham on October 12.
