BIRMINGHAM, Ala.—Birmingham-Southern
inducted its 31st class into the Sports Hall of Fame this evening
at the annual Hall of Fame Banquet in Bruno Great Hall on the BSC
campus.
The six members of the 2011 class are: Tom Avirett
(Football, Basketball, Tennis '48), Thimo Langner
(Men's Soccer '04), Monte Marshall (Baseball
'96), Shelley McGraw (Women's Golf '07), Jason
Pease (Men's Tennis '00), and Jakob Sigurdarson
(Men's Basketball '05).
Avirett was a member of the 1939 football team, the last team
before the sport took a nearly 70-year hiatus. He also starred on
the basketball and tennis teams after returning to school after
serving in World War II. Avirett was an airline pilot for several
years and has also played competitive tennis for the past four
decades, winning medals at almost every age level, including this
past spring at the National 90 Grass Court Championships.
Langner played men's soccer for three seasons, and was
named 2005 Big South Conference Player of the Year. He was a
two-time All-Big South and All-Big South Tournament selection, and
helped lead the Panthers to the 2005 Big South regular season
title. Langner was also named BSC Athlete of the Year that
season.
Marshall starred on the baseball team from 1993-1996, earning
Second-Team NAIA All-America honors his senior season. He helped
the 1995 team to the NAIA World Series, where he was named to the
All-Tournament Team and won the Charles Berry Hustle Award. After
graduation, Marshall was drafted by the Los Angeles Dodgers.
McGraw was the number one player on the 2007 Big South
Conference championship women's golf team and is the career
stroke average record holder with a 76.4 four-year average. She was
also All-Big South Conference and All-NCAA Independent as well as a
member of the Big South Presidential Honor Roll and National Golf
Coaches Association Division I All-Scholar Team.
Pease played tennis for BSC from 1997-2000 and was a two-time
NAIA All-American, including a First-Team nod in 2000. He made
appearances in the NAIA national tournament in 1997 and 1998, and
was ranked nationally in both singles and doubles three of his four
seasons. Pease also earned TranSouth Conference honors and was a
Dean's List member.
Sigurdarson was a two-time All-Big South basketball player and
was named 2002 NCAA Independent Freshman of the Year. In 2004, he
helped lead the Panthers to a Big South co-regular season title.
Sigurdarson is ranked fourth on the all-time scoring list with
1,468 career points and ranks in the top 10 in six categories. He
currently plays professional basketball in Sweden.
