MEMPHIS, Tenn. - The No. 3 Birmingham-Southern baseball team lost 10-2 and 3-1 in a doubleheader at Rhodes College on Saturday afternoon.
In the first game, BSC gave up crooked numbers in the second, fourth, and seventh innings, allowing 10 runs, tied for the most the Panthers have allowed this season. Senior right-hander Andy Hammond (Oxford, Ala./Oxford HS) started the game, tossing four and two-thirds innings before exiting. Oliver Livingston (Decatur, Ga./Decatur HS) and Adam Richards (Santa Rosa Beach, Fla./South Walton HS) came in in relief and finished out the game.
BSC's two runs in the game came off an RBI single by Brian Williams (Marietta, Ga./Lassiter HS) in the third inning and a solo home run by Drew Love (Birmingham, Ala./Calhoun CC) in the sixth.
In the final game of the day, BSC's one run in the first inning was not enough to win as the Lynx scored three runs late.
A throwing error by Rhodes in the top of the first allowed sophomore Luke DePiero (Atlanta, Ga./Walker HS) to cross home from third and give the Panthers their sole run of the game.
Senior southpaw Hanan Mauldin (Florence, Ala./Florence HS) got the start on the mound for BSC, pitching five and a third innings. Mauldin allowed three runs off seven hits in the game, striking out two batters and walking one. Camden McNearney (Kennesaw, Ga./Harrison HS) came in and finished out the game, pitching the last two outs.
After starting off 8-1 this season, Birmingham-Southern's doubleheader defeat at Rhodes drops the Panthers to 8-4. The Panthers look to rebound on Sunday in the series finale at Rhodes. First pitch is scheduled for noon.
