BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The No. 8 Birmingham-Southern baseball team dropped the rubber match in its Southern Athletic Association series against Millsaps, falling to the Majors 12-7 on Sunday afternoon.
Two big home runs by Millsaps (7-8, 2-1 SAA) – a three-run homer in the third inning and a grand slam in the fourth – put Birmingham-Southern (10-6, 2-4 SAA) in a deep hole early on and ultimately, despite plating seven runs, could not find enough offense to mount a full comeback.
Junior right-hander Tristan Harvin (Dothan, Ala./Houston Academy) got the start on the mound for BSC, allowing seven runs off seven hits before exiting after the fourth inning. He was handed the loss to give him a 2-2 record this season. Five more BSC pitchers would make appearances before the end of the game.
The 'Southern offensive effort at the plate was led by shortstop Noah Best (Carrollton, Ga./Villa Rica HS) and Wes Diamantis (Atlanta, Ga./St. Pius X HS), who came in as a pinch hitter in the eighth inning. Best finished with a 3-of-4 day at the plate with a run scored and an RBI. Diamantis was 1-of-2 with a two-run home run in his initial plate appearance. Catcher Will Evans (Peachtree City, Ga./Starrs Mill HS), third baseman Brian Williams (Marietta, Ga./Lassiter HS), and designated hitter Jack Fleming (Suwanee, Ga./Lambert HS) were responsible for three other RBI.
The Panthers will look to rebound with a non-conference weekend slate of games against Wilmington and Emory on Friday, March 13 and Sunday, March 15.
