BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Playing in front of a large and loud crowd, the Birmingham-Southern volleyball team swept Oglethorpe to boost their conference record to 8-1.
The first point of the match started off with a big solo block from
Leah Nielsen. The Petrels fought to keep up with the Panthers, trading points back and forth until Oglethorpe took the lead 13-11. Kills from
Emily Buhl and
Kennedy Dickens were able to put the Panthers back up 14-13. Two more kills from
Kennedy Dickens and an ace from
Ally Mildenberger pushed Birmingham-Southern to 19-16 over Oglethorpe. The Petrels closed up the lead to only trail by one with the Panthers leading 21-20, before back to back kills from
Gigi Fields and one from
Emily Buhl gave the Panthers set point. The Petrels were able to grab one more point off the Panthers before they took set one 25-21.
The second set started with the Panthers jumping out to an early 7-4 lead. Oglethorpe took the lead shortly after at 13-10. But a kill from
Alyssa Coats along with back to back aces from
Ansleigh Dailey shifted the momentum for the Panthers to take the lead. Jumping even further ahead, Birmingham-Southern led Oglethorpe 21-15. The Petrels pushed back to only trail by one at 23-22, but an attack error set the Panthers up for set point. Once again there was a fight and Oglethorpe tied the set up at 24-24.
Kennedy Dickens had a kill and an ace to follow it up to end the second set 26-24.
Oglethorpe took the early lead in the third set at 7-3. Banking off of the errors from the Petrels, the Panthers were on the board at 10-6. The middles shifted momentum with kills from
Leah Nielsen and
Kennedy Dickens to close the gap 11-8.
Ansleigh Dailey took charge and pushed the Panthers on a 5 point run with three of those points being aces from her. The Birmingham-Southern lead at 13-12 did not last long with Oglethorpe coming right back to lead 15-13. The Petrels jumped even further ahead at 19-15, but a kill from
Gigi Fields and an ace from
Kate Powell put the Panthers down by two at 19-17. Another plus twenty battle for the Panthers, they continued to trade off points with the Petrels starting at 22-21 up until Oglethorpe took the lead at 26-25. A kill from
Gigi Fields and back to back errors from Oglethorpe gave the Panthers the next three points to secure the set 28-26.
