ROME, Ga. – The Birmingham-Southern volleyball team played in their fifth consecutive Southern Athletic Association conference tournament championship game. Sadly, they fell to conference rival #12 Berry College in three sets. Although the Panthers fell to the Vikings,
Alyssa Coats and
Gigi Fields were selected to the All-Tournament Team.
The first set started off with Berry taking the early lead at 12-5. The Panthers were able to fight back and tighten up the gap to make it 15-10. The Vikings continued to advance with a 22-14 lead over the Panthers. A kill from
Gigi Fields, big block from Fields and
Leah Nielsen and an ace from
Alyssa Coats gave Birmingham-Southern the next three points, making it 22-17. They eventually fell and Berry took the first set 25-17.
Berry took the early lead in the second set with a 7 point lead over the Panthers. The Panthers battled with the Vikings, trading points but still trailing at 18-10. A service error from the Vikings started a four point run for the Panthers, but the Vikings responded with their own run. Berry finished the second set at 25-19.
Birmingham-Southern took the lead in the final set, finding some momentum to hold off Berry. The Vikings countered with runs of their own that lead them all the way to the end of the set, taking it 25-14.
