SAA CHAMPIONS: BSC tops Berry in overtime to win first title

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Birmingham-Southern men's soccer team (9-3, 5-1 SAA) secured the SAA regular season championship with a 2-1 overtime win against Berry College Sunday.

After a scoreless first half, both teams would score on penalty kicks in the 2nd half to finish regulation 1-1.

The Vikings of Berry were award their PK in the 64th minute after a BSC foul in the box.  Just over a minute later, the Panthers would be awarded their PK after a Berry handball close to the goal.

Sophomore Coleman Jennings (Vestavia Hills, Ala./Vestavia Hills HS) tucked away the penalty shot for his 15th goal (leading NCAA Division III in goals and points) of the season and his seventh goal in SAA action. Play would remain even for the remaining 25 minutes of regulation time.

All it would take is four minutes into the sudden victory overtime period for BSC to secure the win and the regular season championship.

At the 94:12 mark, freshman Pirmin Blattmann (Mountain Brook, Ala./Mountain Brook HS) flighted a free kick into the box from 30 yards out.  The punch out from the Berry goalkeeper was collected by sophomore Bryan Arteaga Cruz (Homewood, Ala./Homewood HS) at the corner of the 18-yard box.  The BSC defender made his way to the end line, cut back to his left foot and served a cross to the middle of the box where junior Christian Hernandez (Ft. Payne, Ala./Ft. Payne HS) finished it with a bicycle kick for his sixth goal of the season and his second game winner of the weekend.

In goal, sophomore Jack Hunt (Newnan, Ga./The Heritage School) played all 94 minutes, facing 12 shots, 5 on goal and recording 4 saves
