MOUNT BERRY, Ga. – Playing the Berry College Vikings for the fourth straight year in the SAA championship match, Birmingham-Southern made a statement on the Vikings' home court to claim their first Southern Athletic Association Volleyball Tournament title. BSC controlled the match from the first serve, dominating the match both on the court and in the box score in the 3-0 (25-18, 25-21, 25-18) victory.
Alyssa Coats (Nolensville, Tenn./Nolensville HS), Ansleigh Dailey (Daphne, Ala./Bayside Academy) and Kennedy Dickens (Brentwood, Tenn./Ravenwood HS) each earned places on the All-Tournament team, and Dailey was named the tournament MVP. Coats pounded down 10 kills in the match to lead the Panthers, and Kennedy Dickens (Brentwood, Tenn./Ravenwood HS) and Gigi Fields (Columbus, Miss./Heritage Academy) chipped in nine kills apiece. Dailey recorded 32 assists in the match, and Julia Shoemake (Huntsville, Ala./The Randolph School) led the back row defense with 17 digs. Rominey Willner (Niceville, Fla./Rocky Bayou Christian School) and Leah Nielsen (Birmingham, Ala./Oak Mountain HS) each had three blocks.
BSC racked up 43 kills in the match, and the Panthers hit .300 (34-10-110) on the afternoon, and the Panthers held the Vikings to an attack percentage of just .170 (36-17-112).
The championship comes in Birmingham-Southern's sixth trip to the SAA final in the last seven seasons. Birmingham-Southern closes its 2020 season with a 10-2 record, 8-2 SAA, as the NCAA Division III Council canceled all fall sport championships in August, which includes women's volleyball.
