PANTHERS FIGHT TO DRAW WITH SCOTS

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The Panthers got down early but fought their way back to even the game multiple times, before ultimately playing to a draw against Covenant today (Sept. 22).

The Panthers, for the second game in a row, gave up a goal within the first three minutes of play. That did not affect them though as three minutes later Abby Walker put one in the back of the net on an assist from Amber Thompson to tie the Scots at 1-1. As the first half progressed both teams tried to take advantage of the defense on some runs. In the 16th minute the Scots were awarded a penalty kick after Elaine Russell fouled a Covenant player in the box.

The Scots successfully converted their penalty kick and took a 2-1 lead early in the first half. Once again Walker tied it up. In the 32nd minute Abby put her sixth goal of the season in the back of the net tying the game 2-2. Just before half the Scots struck again giving them the lead back 3-2. They would take that lead to halftime.

Most of the second half was back and forth until the Panthers were awarded a penalty kick after Sophie Smith was fouled in the box. On the ensuing PK Sophie Smith beat the keeper tying the game once again, this time at 3-3. After the PK goal by Smith the game continued to be back and forth before Amber Thompson was fouled just outside the 18-yard box. Thompson would take the free kick and a chance to score but came up short.

The Panthers and Scots played to a 3-3 tie after neither team could net a goal in the two overtime periods.
