BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Tough defense and capitalizing on turnovers helped push BSC past Berry in their opening game of SAA play. BSC defeated Berry 24-10 to move to 3-1 on the season and start 1-0 in conference.
The Birmingham-Southern defense created a short field for the offense right away. On a third and seven play in Berry territory,
Asante Ferrell intercepted a pass at the Berry 33-yard line to give the Panthers the ball. Eight plays later
Matt McClary found
Byron Millsap in the endzone to put the Panthers up 6-0. The extra point was good and the Panthers were quickly up 7-0 in the game. After getting the ball back BSC marched down the field and put three-points on the board after a 24-yard field goal was knocked through uprights to extend the BSC lead to 10-0 late in the first quarter.
Berry got on the board at the beginning of the second quarter, after moving the ball down the field, their drive stalled out and they settled for a field goal. After stopping BSC on a 4th and 4 forcing the Panthers to turnover the ball on downs, Berry tied the game up after a six pla7, 65-yard drive ended in a Viking touchdown and tying the game 10-10. Neither team scored for the remainder of the half and the teams would go to halftime tied.
On their opening position of the third quarter BSC went down the field and scored a touchdown on a 25-yard touchdown pass from
Matt McClary to
Branden Rew. This gave the Panthers all the momentum they needed for the game. For the remainder of the third quarter both defenses played stout not allowing the other to score and BSC would cling to a seven point lead as the game headed to the fourth quarter.
Late in the fourth quarter
Jon Lewis broke free on a handoff to the right and broke a 36-yard touchdown run to ice the game with 3:10 to go in the game. The Panthers were able to hold Berry out of the endzone and run the clock out after stopping them on first and goal.
Conner Thornburg intercepted a pass to give the Panthers their third victory of the season and first in conference play.
