BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Coming off of a two win weekend, the Panthers were ready for the midweek matchup against the Millsaps Majors.
Kennedy Dickens led Birmingham-Southern in kills tonight with 16 and
Kate Powell had a season high 24 digs and 3 aces.
Millsaps took the early lead in set one at 9-4 over the Panthers. A block from
Gigi Fields and
Kennedy Dickens and a kill from Dickens, put Birmingham-Southern only two points behind to make it 11-9. After falling behind 18-14, the Panthers took four straight points to tie it up 18-18.
Gigi Fields contributed two kills to that run. Kills from
Kennedy Dickens and
Kylie Wilhelmi put the Panthers in the lead 20-19. Even with their comeback and fight, BSC was unable to stop Millsaps and the Majors took set one 25-20.
Set two was a major momentum shift with the Panthers going on an eight point run to take the lead 10-1. Kills from
Kennedy Dickens and
Kylie Wilhelmi pushed that to a 13-3 lead, and another kill from
Kylie Wilhelmi and one from
Ainsley Schultz stretched the lead to 11 points at 17-6. Birmingham-Southern held the lead at 21-10 before the Majors were able to find some momentum and put up five straight to close the gap 21-15. BSC was ready to take the set victory and took the next four out of five points to win set two 25-16.
The third set started off similar to set two with BSC taking the early lead at 8-3 and then pushing it to 12-5 over the Majors. Kills from
Alyssa Coats and
Gigi Fields made it 14-7 for the Panthers. The Majors took four straight to try and catch up but the Panthers only let one point go out of the next 12 to win set three. Three kills from
Gigi Fields, two kills from
Kennedy Dickens, one from
Kylie Wilhelmi, and two service aces, including set point, came from
Ainsley Schultz to take eight straight points to end set three.
The Majors tried to turn things around in set four, taking the lead this tie at 9-3 over the Panthers. Birmingham-Southern was quick to fight back, closing the gap on the lead and making it 13-11, only behind by two points.
Gigi Fields,
Leah Nielsen and
Ainsley Schultz all contributed a kill to a four point run that put the Panthers ahead 15-14. Kills from
Kennedy Dickens and
Kylie Wilhelmi and an error from the Majors, pushed the lead to 19-16. A big block from
Leah Nielsen and
Alyssa Coats put the Panthers only four points away from taking the match. Leah Neilsen ended the set and match with a kill to take it all for the Panthers.
