BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The match started off with a game delay due to staffing issues that put it starting 45 minutes past the original game time. Even with a rocky start, the Panthers were able to pull off a win in four sets over the Tigers.
Set one started off with even play between the two teams as the Tigers took the first lead at 4-3, but it was soon a tie game again at 8-8.
Kylie Wilhelmi and
Alyssa Coats put the Panthers in the lead at 11-9 with three kills in a row. Once again it was tied at 11-11, continuing to trade points off, Sewanee would be the ones to take the final lead at 23-18. Even after holding the Tigers at set point three times, the Panthers fell 25-22 in set one.
The second set started off similar to the first with lots of points back and forth between the Tigers and Panthers. Birmingham-Southern took the lead at 8-6 with back to back kills from
Gigi Fields. Continuing to fight off the Tigers tying the set, the Panthers maintained their lead and pushed it to 18-14 but the Tigers tried to fight back and made it 18-17. BSC pushed on taking the last three points in a row of set two to win it 25-21.
The Tigers took the first lead in set three at 5-3 but the Panthers were able to tie it up at 5-5 after a kill from
Kylie Wilhelmi and an error from the Tigers. BSC took their first lead of the game at 8-7 with a kill from
Gigi Fields and then pushed to make it 10-8.
Alyssa Coats got a kill that put the Panthers up 14-10. The Tigers fought on and tightened the Panthers lead to only one point at 16-15. Birmingham-Southern went on a six point run to extend the lead 22-15 and eventually won the set 25-21.
Birmingham-Southern was looking to win their third straight set after falling in the first, to end this match in a victory. Moving with their momentum, the Panthers took an early 6-2 lead and then even further at 8-3. Sewanee went on to take the next six points and the lead at 9-8. After a small back and forth, the Tigers took the lead again at 11-10. The Panthers were not ready to give up and went on a 9 point run to hold the lead at 19-11, and then 21-12. Proving that they were not done either, the Tigers fought all the way back at 22-20 and then held the Panthers at match point twice. The match ended with a kill from
Alyssa Coats, taking the final set 25-23.
