BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Birmingham-Southern men's soccer team was able to grind out their first conference win against Berry.
The match looked to be an interesting one when Berry stunningly scored off of a free kick within the first minute. Luckily, this would prove to be an anomaly as it would be their only goal of the heated matchup.
The Panthers quickly regained their composure and took over the ball and the momentum. After a few shots, they brought the match to a draw with
Trey Hines scoring on a perfectly placed assist from fellow team captain
Coleman Jennings.
Shots and penalties continued to fly with the teams combining for three cautions and 10 shots in the half. Despite this, the half would end in a draw with hopes of a cleaner half to come.
The Vikings once again came out of the gates hot, firing off shots as fast as they could line them up. They were unable to connect on any, and the Panthers looked to strike on these shortcomings. They would move into the opposing penalty box and draw a foul, which would set up
Trey Hines for a decisive penalty kick goal.
Now, with clear control of the match, the Panthers looked to protect their lead against the fiery Vikings. The Panthers were able to stave off all advances to pull out the win, even with a frantic final minute of corner kicks.
