JACKSON, Miss. – The Birmingham-Southern women's basketball team rounded out the Millsaps Thanksgiving Classic with Centenary College. The Panthers were able to hold off a late-game push from Centenary to lock in the 102-101 win.
The first quarter got off to a slow start, but the Panthers started to heat up on offense towards the end. They were able to keep the hot streak going in the second to start chipping into the lead. With nine different Panthers scoring buckets in the quarter, they were able to put up 31 points and bring the game to 47-51.
Two quick shots from
Brooke Westhoelter to start the second half put the Panthers in the driver's seat briefly, but the rest of the third quarter was a back-and-forth battle. BSC headed into the fourth only down by one. Luckily, they were able to keep up their energy on defense and continue to knock down shots on the other end, building up a 12-point lead. However, Centenary did not back down, pushing the Panthers to the final seconds, but ultimately falling short.
Lauryn Towns (15) and
Brooke Westhoelter (16) were the only Panthers scoring in double digits for the day. Katie Brooke Clemmons kept the ball moving with a team high of six assists.
