PANTHERS TAKE DOWN MAJORS TO ADVANCE TO SEMIFINALS

ROME, Ga. - The Panthers began their postseason play with a win in the first round of the conference tournament. Birmingham-Southern went into the tournament ranked second and faced Millsaps who was ranked seventh. 

The Panthers dropped set one to Millsaps after holding at 20-15 lead over the Majors. Birmingham-Southern came out strong in set two and took the first 10 straight points to start things off. An ace from Abby Dunford and a block from Kennedy Dickens and Gigi Fields pushed the lead to 13-3. The Majors fought back to close up the Panthers lead ot only four points at 14-10. Alyssa Coats put down a kill that would start a run for Birmingham-Southern, giving them the next seven out of eight points, making it 21-11. A kill from Kylie Wilhelmi and a block by Ainsley Schultz and Kennedy Dickens pushed the Panthers to set point. Kennedy Dickens ended set two for BSC with a kill at 25-13. 

Set three started off in favor of the Majors, with them holding an early 5-1 lead. The Panthers were able to find their momentum and close up the gap making it only a three point lead for the Majors at 10-7. Millsaps was up 17-12, but a kill from Alyssa Coats and two consecutive errors by the Majors made it 17-15. Two more errors from Millsaps and a big block by Kennedy Dickens and Gigi Fields tied things up at 20-20. The Majors fought back but Alyssa Coats tied it up once again and Leah Nielsen gave the Panthers the lead at 23-22. Trading points back and forth, this set went into extra points before the Panthers took it 28-26, ending in a big block by Kennedy Dickens

Birmingham-Southern went up 7-3 to start things off in set four. Three errors from Millsaps and three blocks by the Panthers extended that to 13-4. Allowing the Majors to gain a few points here and there, BSC pushed their lead to 18-8 and eventually 21-12. Four consecutive points for the Panthers ended set four and ended the match in a victory for Birmingham-Southern. Kylie Wilhelmi got the first and last kill of the four point run that ended match.
