MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The Birmingham-Southern men's soccer team claim the SAA Tournament Championship in a wire-to-wire match.
The first half was a slow one with the Vikings handling the bulk of the offensive load in terms of shots, and the Panthers holding their own defensively. This balance allowed the Panthers to keep the score even and prepare for the second.
A burst of energy hit both teams coming out of the break as they nearly went shot for shot with each other. Despite no scoring from the Panthers, Giacomo Magrini kept the opposition in check totaling six saves for the half. With regulation ending in a draw, the match headed into overtime.
Concerns began to rise when the Vikings found the back of the net quickly in the first period, but the Panthers simply would not give in. They locked down defensively and push the ball when given the chance, but ended the period scoreless.
At this point, both squads appeared to be running out of steam with the second period returning to a defensive battle. Just when the unfortunate ending seemed inevitable,
Kenneth Toledo bounced his shot off of a defender to chip the ball perfectly over the goalkeeper and pushing the match to a shootout.
This is where the Panthers truly shined. The combination of Magrini in goal and the Panthers lineup was too overpowering for the drained Vikings. The match was sealed by
Coleman Jennings who would go on to be named the tournament MVP.
Trey Hines and Giacomo Magrini were also featured as members of the All-Tournament Team.
