SEWANEE, Tenn. - A foggy day in Sewanee made an interesting game for the Birmingham-Southern softball team. Going into a fog delay early in the game and later resuming, trying to play through the weather, the game was eventually called after 5 innings.
Both teams were scoreless after the first inning, with BSC leaving one on base after
Kaylyn Chapman was hit by a pitch to get on base. In the top of the second,
Jada Askew hit a double to right center putting the Panthers in good scoring position, but they could not capitalize on it. The first run of the game came from Sewanee in the bottom of the second, taking the lead 1-0 over the Panthers.
Birmingham-Southern was ready to come back in the top of the third and
Morgan McGuire started it off with a walk, then went on to steal second.
Kaylyn Chapman singled through the left side to advance McGuire to third. A single from
Kailey Walters brought in McGuire to tie up the game. With runners on second and third,
Sam Hilyer hit a homerun out of center field to take the lead 4-1 over the Tigers.
The Panthers would continue their momentum and
Hailee Bryan would go on to strike out three in a row to get the Panthers through the bottom of the third. BSC would put up another run in the top of the fourth as
Kailey Walters hit an RBI triple to bring in
Kaylyn Chapman. Holding a 5-1 lead going into the bottom of the fifth, the Panthers were looking comfortable. Sewanee had other ideas and came back to take the game 6-5 in a walk off single.
